Ibotta App Review 2019: Is It Legit Or Is It Just Deceiving You?

I’ve been an online marketer for over a decade now and it’s not my first time to hear people earning from a mobile app. But with more and more people trying this so-called Ibotta App, it got me curious what’s in it that women and men alike are crazy about it.

Hence, this Ibotta App Review 2019!

We are living in a cash-demanding world. The pressure of continous price hikes is already pushing people to look for better paying jobs and some others resort to methods other than traditional employment to earn extra income.

I scouted the internet some time ago to find new crazes on making money online and I happened to ran over this app that many moms are seemingly installing on their mobile phones. They claim that they are earning money from spending cash on groceries and some other items. Now, how did this happen?

Is it legit? Or is it just deceiving people?

Will you really earn money or is it just prompting you to spend more cash?

We’ll find out today!

Ibotta is your digital couponing app

Recommended: Yes, I recommend it for discounted items but also No, I won’t recommend it to those who want to make money online.

What is Ibotta App?

The Ibotta app is easy to use. There are multiple steps to take so that it pays off, but the steps are simple and the instructions are clear on how to maneuver through the app.

What gives Ibotta an edge in building its popularity among couponers is that the savings gleaned via the app are in addition to the other saving strategies shoppers use, such as redeeming coupons, rewards programs, coupon stacking and matching, rebates and other money-saving apps. This makes it an important inclusion in the couponers’ toolbox for savings.

The company partners with brands and retailers to offer rebates and discounts on consumer packaged goods, retail purchases, and restaurant dining through a mobile app, similar to traditional coupons or rebates. Ibotta also has cash back and rebates on alcohol (wine, beer, and spirits) that can be purchased at bars, restaurants, and liquor and grocery stores. Ibotta users must be of legal drinking age, even if the consumer has no intention of purchasing beer or wine, or if they patronize a business that does not sell such items.

The app is available on both iOS and Android devices and is available only in the United States. As of 2016, Ibotta had received over $73 million in funding. By 2019, it was reported that the Ibotta app had been downloaded more than 30 million times and had given users $500 million in rewards money.

How Does Ibotta Work?

Think of Ibotta like digital coupons. Instead of getting your discount at the register, though, you get cash back added to your Ibotta account.

That cash back builds up in your account. Whenever you feel it’s reached a big enough sum that you want to take it out, you can withdraw it. If you want cash, you can use PayPal or Venmo. Or, you can also exchange your Ibotta balance for gifts cards. That can be a good strategy because sometimes the gift cards are offered at a discount.

You might only have to pay $20 to get a $25 gift card, for instance.

Ultimately, there are two ways to earn with Ibotta:

  1. In-store
  2. Mobile shopping

To get started with Ibotta, you will need to own a compatible device and have a PayPal or Venmo account. Alternately, shoppers can collect rewards and cash them in to receive featured gift cards from select retailers if that is preferred over the cash option.

Here’s how to use it:

  • To begin, you will tap on the Ibotta symbol on your mobile device and that will bring you to the heart of the app, called the “Offers” section.
  • The “Offers” section displays pictures of the products with offers and the total amount of how much you can get back in cash displayed under each product.
  • When you find a product that you are interested in purchasing, tap on the “Earn $–” bar to view the tasks that you need to complete in order to earn the cash back after you purchase that product.
  • You will see that for most products, you have more than one way to earn cash. You can complete one or all of the tasks. The more tasks you perform, the more cash you will get back.
  • Examples of the tasks include reading a fact, participating in a quick poll, watching a short video, posting on your Facebook page, or writing a brief comment about the product.
  • When you complete at least one task per product offer, the product is automatically added to your “Checklist” on the Ibotta app so you can earn money for purchasing the item.
  • Most of the tasks can be completed very quickly and take about the same or less time than it takes to clip and file a paper coupon.
  • In order to get the cash for completing the tasks, you will then need to purchase the products at a participating store.
  • Next, you will want to browse the “Store Extras” section because it has offers that are store specific. For example, Target may have offers that you can only qualify for when you purchase the product at Target.

When you’re getting “free money” like this, it’s important to know why. It helps you understand why cash back apps aren’t a scam if you know how they earn their profits. This knowledge will make you feel more comfortable if you’ve ever wondered, “Is Ibotta legit?”

Ibotta works by referring customers to a store. Ibotta gets paid a referral commission whenever something is bought. That’s how it makes its money.

Ibotta is happy to share that referral commission with you, because you’re a key part of their success. Without you and other shoppers like you, they wouldn’t earn a referral commission. And the service benefits companies that are pushing certain products because having a cash-back offer can make customers more likely to buy that particular item. This kind of platform is a win-win situation for everyone involved – the company, Ibotta, and the customer.

Ibotta also earns money from the advertisements on its platform. Remember that video you had to watch to unlock an offer?

That’s how it works.

Now, like I’ve been mentioning a lot of times, you earn money in your Ibotta account when you buy through the app and complete the corresponding tasks per item.

When you look at it, it’s not actually a way to make money online. The better term is saving money on shopping. There’s a difference between the two.

How Much Do You Save on Ibotta?

How much a person saves with Ibotta depends upon how much they shop, how much they use the app, and if they use it just for products or for services as well.

Sometimes there are offers that will bulk up your earnings. Take that hotels.com 7%-off deal we discussed earlier; people who used that opportunity to book a vacation or a bunch of work trips obviously will make a lot more off of Ibotta than someone who just clips a few yogurt coupons.

Or, if you have several kids in your household, you’re going to earn a lot more cash back from groceries than someone who is just buying for one person.

Overall, everyone can probably earn back at least a few dollars a week just shopping for pretty basic groceries. Others may be able to earn closer to $100 a month.

What I Like About Ibotta?

Numerous Participating Retailers

Ibotta has a Preferred Partners plan that includes retailers who are affiliated directly with Ibotta.

That allows you to link loyalty cards to the Ibotta coupon app, so you get great returns for little effort. This can earn you money without taking pictures of receipts — although you’ll still want to check out the site to see what the deals are at that particular store.

Earn Savings Right Away

Once you’ve signed up, you can start earning money right away, retroactively. You can use a receipt that’s up to seven days old. So if you went on a shopping spree two days ago, you can still get cash back for any qualifying purchases. You don’t have to wait until the next time you shop.

Just look at the receipt and scan the barcodes of any qualifying products. Then take a picture of the receipt and watch your savings start to grow.

Limited Time Bonuses

Ibotta has some great limited time offers. By knowing what’s out there, you can score big deals and maximize your cash back earnings.

Your savings can go way beyond just digital coupons. Some of the best deals are the ones you’ll get for trying out new products and services. There was once a food subscription at Blue Apron where Ibotta offered $52 cash back. That’s the kind of savings you can land by going outside of your comfort zone and experimenting with different products or services.

Bonuses Can Be Used Multiple Times

Most digital coupons can be scanned multiple times, which opens up a whole other level of savings. You can reuse these offers until they disappear.

Load up on an item if it’s a great deal and you know you’ll use it. Things like toilet paper, cleaning supplies and tissues are good items to stockpile. And if you watch the expiration dates on other items, you may find it makes sense to take advantage of the offer repeatedly.

Ibotta App – The Ugly Truth Revealed

If you were thinking Ibotta is a way for you to earn income, it’s not. This platform is basically helping you get some savings out of your grocery or shopping items. But try to avoid overbuying products or you may end up doing more harm than good to your wallet.

Stores use coupons to entice customers to spend more money than they had anticipated. Simply put: people buy things they don’t need because they get sucked into an attractive deal. We all love a good deal. But don’t buy things you don’t need just because they’re on sale.

Another issue I saw is that even if Ibotta has grown bigger with more participating stores, there are still parts of U.S.A. that see only a few option on where to shop Ibotta. Most small towns only have Walmart as their local option.

There's a chance to overspend on Ibotta because of the tempting deals

Who is Ibotta for?

If you’re already a “couponer,” Ibotta is definitely for you because it’s going to save you time while providing the same great deals.

If you’re looking to save a bunch of money, Ibotta probably isn’t for you. If you have no control on spending or if you think you are can be a shopping freak, then don’t even install. You might end up getting all items because of the flashy discounts.

Here are two hacks you can do to get the most from the app:

  1. Before getting groceries, open Ibotta and look at some of “hot” and “for you” offers. If you see something you really need and you’re really going to buy regardless of the coupon, add it to your offers. This way, you’ll avoid overspending.
  2. Before making an expensive tech purchase, check to see if the tech stores have any generic promotions.

Is Ibotta A Legit Way To Make Money Online?

Ibotta is a great app when it comes to earning cash back. You can later use all the earnings on your account to buy whatever you’ll need in the future.

Signing up is quick, and the app is easy to use. There can be a little bit of a learning curve, though. It’s the type of money-saver that gets easier the more you use it.

As you go along, you’ll find tricks and tips that will reduce how much time you spend. One thing you can do is scan the items as you put them into the grocery cart and then take a picture of your receipt before you leave the store. That will be much easier than scanning the barcodes when you’re trying to put away all your groceries at home.

However, it can be deceiving to use the app. You might think you are still earning money, but when you get addicted, you’re doing a shopping spree instead of saving. The key is don’t get sidetracked by a good-looking deal on something unnecessary. Do a quick search and add the offers that catch your eye on things that you were going to buy anyway.

For those who thought this app is an easy way to earn income, sorry. It’s nothing like that.

A lot of people are tempted to try platforms because the ad mentions “earn money.”

If you are looking for a way to make money online, the best recommendation I have for you is to try affiliate marketing. But then again, this isn’t for everybody. If you want to know about affiliate marketing and if you want to check if you can do it, then read my Wealthy Affiliate Review.
